Bruce Thompson
CEO, Red Bumper

Thompson began his journey in the technology industry when he founded cybereXpo in 1999. The cybereXpo concept involved building and installing high-speed Internet access terminals, or kiosks, in super-regional malls across the United States. Each “cybercenter” contained 10-15 free access terminals strategically built in a cluster with a combination of 6-10 high-definition plasma screens overhead. Patrons could access the Internet for free on a high-speed connection; which was a rarity in 1999-2000. Revenue was generated when users would click on banners or buttons of cybereXpo advertisers. Advertisers included Levi’s, Pepsi, and Sony.

Thompson's lead investor in cybereXpo was Andrew McKelvey. Mr. McKelvey was the Founder and CEO of TMP Worldwide (NASDAQ: TMPW). More notably, McKelvey and TMP had acquired Monster.com in 1995.

At its peak, cybereXpo employed over 450 employees and had 4.5 million users in 115 super-regional malls across the United States. Thompson sold the company to a competitor in early 2001, foreseeing the looming dot-com bust.

Thompson is given credit as the creator of modern day automotive inventory management in the United States with his founding of American Auto Exchange (AAX) in 2001. American Auto Exchange was the first system to generate stocking recommendations for dealerships across the country by looking at historical turn times, profit per day, and velocity of sales. The system initially focused on the larger dealer groups in the country (AutoNation, Sonic, Group1, Asbury). By doing so, the system could optimally determine the store within the group where a particular vehicle was most likely to sell for the most amount of money. By 2005, 85,000 appraisals per week were being conducted on the AAX platform. The company was sold in May of 2005 to JM Family Enterprises for approximately $50 million dollars. Thompson signed a five-year non-compete in the competitive space upon his exit from the company.

In 2010, after his non-compete agreement had expired, Thompson began the process of founding RedBumper, a new breed inventory management solution that not only used historical sales performance data to make stocking recommendations, but also market transactional data. RedBumper also incorporates different modules into its suite of tools, including built-in equity mining tools, dynamic auto-pricing for online inventory, consumer smartphone application development for dealerships, and a solution that drives consumer traffic by sourcing private sellers listing their vehicles online.
