Optimizing for local search engines

What is a local search engine?

Local search engine refers to online yellow pages and specially designed algorithm by likes of MSN*, Yahoo, Google and AOL.com to return results in a geographical area. Take for example Google Maps, on this service you can type in an exact location or just general keywords for a service offered, i.e. Used Car Dealers, Ames, Iowa. Try it for your business, if you do not come up under the expected keywords; you need to optimize your business profile.

Updating the data source

Most local search engines pull there data from providers like InfoUSA and Acxiom. As a business you must make sure that these database contain accurate and up-to-date information. Making changes to this data isn't difficult. To update your profile on InfoUSA please visit http://list.infousa.com/dbupdate.htm.

Most local search engines provide means for you directly update there data online, look for "Update Your Profile" in the footer of these search engine web sites.

Enhancing your dealerships profile

Before beginning your optimization take a breather and profile your business. Write a one 350 character paragraph that accurately describes your business and your location but keep it simple and readable. Try to input as many different keywords as you can into the profile.

Know the categories you want to target before hand. Google Local offers you to be included in five categories at most so choose them wisely. Pay attention to opinion published about your dealership. Keep an eye on CitySearch.com, Yahoo Local Reviews, DealerRater.com, LemonFree.com and others. These reviews can affect your business's reputation. Setup Google Alerts to inform you whenever you dealership is mentioned online. Don't get blind sided by bad reviews.

Proactively solicit reviews from your customers to improve your business reputation, rank, and content quality with in local search engines.

Pay – Per - Click

This is good in-depth info. Ironic how these principles have been around a relatively long time but are still far beyond the minds of many people, particularly in the automotive industry.

I am working on an entry that talks about the power of organic placement over purchased ads. I am finding that PPC is not all it is cracked up to be and that organic optimization can do more for sites. There is a great <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/business2/business2..."> article in a recent Business 2.0 magazine issue</a> about newer kinds of web advertising that challenge PPC. Might want to check it out when you have time.

You can not beat organic optimization. But PPC does work if done right... we managed closed 220K last quarter in PPC spend for our clients... so we know it works if done right.

Regarding Business 2.0 article I was promised all these things by Double-Click and CJ in 2000. I guess we would have to wait and see... for it to be successful it has to be accessible to small business, thats why PPC is so popular as there are no entry costs for do-it-yourselfer's.

Not everyone can spend 20K a month in data-driven advertising from Yahoo!. Plus who is to say public opinion will not turn against companies like yahoo for keeping tabs on users browsing habits.

This might seem odd to some, but I am an advocate for advertisers keeping tabs on my online activities because I would prefer to be marketed with things of interest and utility to me versus the opposite. Besides, it is not realistic to escape being tracked in today's society, online or off.

Are you familiar with Red McCombs Media? I just came across this today while speaking with Tony Rimas of McCombs Enterprises. The business was actually acquired from another company (forget name). Apparently, their focus is behavioral marketing.

You still have to worry about banner ad blindness. Most of us ignore banner ads... there was a recent study done on this where the contextual ads (PPC) did lot better then banner ads..

No I have not heard about redmccombsmedia.com. I checked out the site... it provided very little information on there behavioral targeting. They do have a large number of publishers to pull this off...
